You might have heard that to make money blogging you need to grow and nurture an email list. This is definitely true. From the very beginning of your blog journey, you should start an email list. You might think you should grow your audience first but honestly, you need to grow your list at the same time. From the very start. Let me drill that point home: start an email list!

Why is this so important?

You own it.

You own your email list. Social media followers are important, yes, but you don’t own your following there. Algorithms can change, and platforms can disappear entirely. But your list is yours and no one can take it from you.

You have full control over it.

Similar to above, social media can change over time. You may have a ton of followers but they may not be seeing all of your content (I’m looking at you, Facebook.) With your list, you control what they receive from you and you can be sure they will get your emails (although whether or not they read it is up to your nurturing abilities.)

Email subscribers are your biggest fans.

People try to keep junk out of their email inbox. When someone signs up for your list they honestly want to hear from you. They are your biggest fans and they will convert better than the general public into sales. This is of course if you nurture them and continue to give them value. They may have signed up for a freebie, but you need to keep sending them stuff. And even if your list is small, keep in mind that the person that signed up to hear from you doesn’t know that. Write to them like you have 10,000 people on your list.

Growing your email list is important from day one. I use MailerLite for my email list. There are a lot of functions on the free plan that works really well for automation. I know everyone and their Mom has ConvertKit but you don’t need to pay that much for an email list right out of the gate, just make sure you have a list going.

If you are interested in starting a blog of your own, I created a tutorial that will help you, How to Start a Blog. If you are asking yourself “Can you seriously make money blogging?” My main tip is to be self-hosted. This is essential if you want to monetize your blog. It also makes you look more professional to companies you will partner with. Blogging income won’t happen unless you are self-hosted. You can pick from these links: Bluehost,  or HostGator.
