Are you a blogger? You might be new and wondering how to step up your game. There are definitely some mistakes to avoid as a blogger in 2018. Here are some to look out for.
Not being self-hosted. The first mistake a new blogger makes is trying to blog on wordpress.com or blogger.com. Not a good idea. You are limited on making money and you don’t own your content. Try Wordpress on a self-hosted blog or Squarespace.
Not using Google Analytics. Immediately when you start your blog you want to start tracking your progress. Google analytics will tell you your most popular content and where you are getting traffic.
Not writing for your audience. Everyone tells you to niche down. The truth is blogs with niches make money and general blogs make money too. But you need to know your auidence in either case. You should be asking yourself who your blog post will help, what problem will it solve and will it answer the questions fully? These questions are key.
Not getting technical. You want to think about plugins, permalinks, and site speed right away. You don’t want to use dates in your permalinks, especially if your site has evergreen content (and it should!)
Limiting sharibility. You want your post to be easily shared on social media. You definitely want to have a Pin It button, as an example.
No about page. Brand reps will be checking out this page. Include a picture if relevant to your niche.
No email list. You need to be email marketing from day one. You own your list, but you don’t own social media profiles, keep this in mind. When you are ready to launch a product, you want an audience that already loves your content, like those who have signed up for your email list!
Not promoting your posts consistently. You need to be promoting your posts at all times, not just the week you wrote it. Share on Pinterest group boards and in Facebook groups.
A wild blog design. Don’t have a million pop ups and all kinds of crazy stuff on your website. It needs to be easy to navigate. If you aren’t tech, have someone on Fiverr help you.
These are just some examples of how to avoid mistakes on your blog in 2018. Blogging is hard work but it is very rewarding.
