If you are going to make money blogging you can’t just wing it. You need a blogging strategy. Here are some things to consider for planning out your own blog strategy as soon as possible.
Have time management goals.
Avoid wasting time on social media. Pick social media that will bring you the most investment. I like wasting time on Pinterest, but it has gotten me over 200k views per month. Not too shabby. Right now Facebook is a complete waste of time for me. I think when I start investing in ads I will spend more time there but for now it's just a time suck.
Make the most out of your work time.
Follow a planner, such as:
- EPIC BLOG: One Year Editorial Planner
- Smart Blog Planner
- Michael’s Recollections Planner
- Erin Condren Deluxe Monthly Planner
Use a to-do list every day. Block out time for certain tasks. If you are stuck on something consider moving it to first thing tomorrow (or your best working time of day) and moving on to something else. Sometimes I just can’t get past a certain thing on my to-do list and I really just have to move on. I’m sharpest in the morning, so that's when I have to do the most time consuming or least interesting tasks of my day.
Make goals for content creation.
For me, that’s blogging every day this Summer before I start college again in the Fall. I’d also like to get into creating video and repurposing my content on Youtube. New content is great for SEO. You can really mix a blog and a Youtube channel together for great results. I’ve wanted to do this for awhile now but I haven’t gotten there just yet. I will be starting before the end of the Summer.
When you are just starting out, pick one social media platform and master it, and then move on to the next. As I mentioned, I’m doing pretty great right now on Pinterest (shameless plug, follow me!) So now I am moving on to Instagram (follow me there too!). I actually already get a decent amount of traffic from Instagram but I want to improve it and make my grid better. I recently signed up with Planoly and so far so good! To be honest I don’t do a whole lot on Facebook other than sending my posts to my page. However, once I finish with Instagram I am going to start looking into the possibility of Facebook ads. I certainly know what NOT to do as they are constantly in my Facebook feed and most of them are corny or have bad copy.
Definitely sign up for Tailwind since Boardbooster is no more. Use Planoly for Instagram. You can use Recurpost for Facebook and Linkedin. I use HootSuite and Buffer for Twitter.
If you want to experiment with the idea of a VA, you can check out gigs on Fiverr and see if anything there would work for you before investing in hiring a contract employee.
Have Goals for Income.
So for me, my first goal is to get enough views to sign up for Mediavine. My traffic is getting so much better and I think that is going to happen for me soon. I’m also considering repurposing some of my most popular content into a second ebook. You can get my first ebook by signing up for my email list.
Some ways to make income from your blog are:
Ads (like Mediavine)
Sponsored posts (a post written promoting a company/product for money)
Affiliate marketing (my links throughout my posts for certain products)
One on one services (such as freelance writing)
Products (like my ebook if I charged for it)
How can you push your income strategy?
You should diversify and have most if not all of the above income strategies going on your blog.
Promote on your blog with links in various places such as above the fold and in your sidebar. Start an grow an email list, those readers are your biggest fans.
Remember why you started. For me, it was to make income in a non-traditional way due to chronic illness. I also love to write and blogging keeps me busy. A huge goal for me is to become a digital nomad and travel full-time with my husband. I’m not there yet but many bloggers travel while they work so it’s not really as much of a crazy fantasy as it might seem.

If you are interested in starting a blog of your own, I created a tutorial that will help you, How to Start a Blog. If you are asking yourself “Can you seriously make money blogging?” My main tip is to be self-hosted. This is essential if you want to monetize your blog. It also makes you look more professional to companies you will partner with. Blogging income won’t happen unless you are self-hosted. You can pick from these links: Bluehost, or HostGator.
