Are you a writer or a blogger? You may be interested in blogging for money but you aren’t getting much traffic to your site yet. It takes time to have a blog that gets a lot of traffic and makes income. Most of us want income that is at least somewhat passive, but at first, you may need to have more of a service business in order to meet your income goals. One way to do this is freelance blogging. You basically pitch your service to other blogs for pay. Here are the steps to start freelance blogging.
Make sure you start a blog if you don’t already have one. Continue to research blogging and stay on top of industry trends. If you are interested in starting a blog of your own, I created a tutorial that will help you, How to Start a Blog. If you are asking yourself “Can you seriously make money blogging?” My main tip is to be self-hosted. This is essential if you want to monetize your blog. It also makes you look more professional to companies you will partner with. Blogging income won’t happen unless you are self-hosted. You can pick from these links: Bluehost, or HostGator.
You’ll want to purchase your own domain at those links above. When you start a service business you’ll want a name that fits you now and also gives you the opportunity to grow and expand. For me, the best choice was my name. I suggest you do that too if it is available. It doesn’t box you in, and it’s a common thing to do. You should also go with a .com if it’s available in my opinion. No one is going to remember your website is .blog or something weird like that.
Learn blog writing skills. Blogging is different than traditional writing. You’ll want to have white space, subheadings, numbered lists (like this one), and a call to action at the end of the post. Blog writing is pretty casual. It’s enjoyable which is a good thing because you should ideally be writing every day (Note I didn’t say posting every day, definitely not!)
You may need to cite your sources if you include facts in your posts. This won’t happen all the time but it will happen. You’ll also want to make sure if you are using outside sources that you just run it through a search on Copyscape. I don’t plagiarize but it is an industry standard site, and this makes sure you aren’t’ going to “word for word” with the sources you are using. You always want to pass Copyscape. Please note though it is not free, but worth every cent. That’s not an affiliate link, either. You’ll also want to run it through Grammarly which has a free version to check for errors.
Create samples. The easiest way to do this is to write on your own blog but you can also guest post, use LinkedIn publisher, and create a portfolio on a portfolio site. Honestly, if you are going to do the work then why not have a self-hosted blog you can earn income from?
Include that you are a freelance blogger for hire in all your social media profiles.
Start sending cold pitches and also using job boards. (Some people hate on job boards but personally, I find them useful.) Problogger is a good one.
With these steps, you’ll be a freelance blogger in no time. It's a great feeling to own your business and work for yourself. Perhaps you are a stay at home Mom looking for a new career. Maybe you hate your job. Whatever reason you choose to pursue freelance blogging doesn’t really matter, it is doable. You’ll need to keep researching and stick to a schedule, but you can do it.
