Welcome to Get Started Blogging Day 2!
Get Started Blogging Day 2: How to choose a niche.
You might be sure you want to start a blog but a bit unsure about choosing a niche. Most bloggers will tell you that if you try to appeal to everyone you appeal to no one. In 2018, it might be hard to get off the ground with a lifestyle blog, although some people manage to do it. It is much easier though to choose one topic with a few subtopics and stick to that.
Most people say you should go with something you are passionate about. Well, that may or may not be true. You need to choose something you are passionate about that will have an audience. A good way to check for this is to search for your topic on Pinterest. Although you might be scared of competition, it's actually a good thing. It means you don’t have to reinvent the wheel and there are actually people interested in your topic. In addition, although you don’t have to be an expert, you should go into something you know a decent amount about, as it will make it easier for you to write about it.
You can monetize any type of blog too, pretty much. There are many ways to monetize.
Here are some possible blog topic ideas.
Fitness and health
As you can see, these topics do well on Pinterest.
Getting topic ideas.
Another thing I highly recommend after getting your main idea sorted is to do a search on the website Answer the Public. When you search for your main topic, it will give you the terms and questions people are searching on Google. This will help you a great deal with getting blog post ideas.
Do you need to be an expert?
I mean, it helps, but you can also take readers on a journey as you learn. I’m not necessarily an “expert” but I have industry experience and I do know a lot about my subject choice. You can’t really get a degree in blogging but I am pursuing a degree in design with a minor in writing. But you don’t have to go back to school to be a blogger. No worries.
If you are blogging about legal or tax info then, yes, you should probably be an expert.
How do you come up with a blog name?
Make it easy to spell.
Have it make sense with your topic.
Don’t make it cute.
You should probably use your name. (It doesn’t box you in, should you change course.)
Stay tuned for tomorrow’s lesson on how to sign up for hosting.

If you are interested in starting a blog of your own, I created a tutorial that will help you, How to Start a Blog. If you are asking yourself “Can you seriously make money blogging?” My main tip is to be self-hosted. This is essential if you want to monetize your blog. It also makes you look more professional to companies you will partner with. Blogging income won’t happen unless you are self-hosted. You can pick from any of these links: Bluehost, HostGator, or SiteGround.
